Most of our strainer lids and inline filters use a mesh in the region of 1-5mm, fine enough to stop leaves, moss and coarse grit while still allowing good flow rates during heavy downpours. If your system feeds a pump or sprinkler heads, a finer mesh reduces the chance of nozzle blockages further down the line.

A standard lid keeps out light, insects and casual debris, but it won't stop leaves and silt washing straight in with the rainwater. A dedicated strainer lid or in-line filter captures that debris before it settles and starts to rot, which keeps the water fresher and cuts down on tank cleaning.

Our strainer lids are designed to fit most standard IBC tops and drum openings, and the five-piece and eight-piece funnel sets are handy if you're managing several IBCs on one site. It's worth measuring the neck or collar diameter of your tank before ordering, as older or non-standard tanks can vary slightly.

This depends on your surroundings — a tank under overhanging trees will need more frequent attention than one on open ground. As a general rule, check the strainer after any heavy rainfall or storm and clear it every few weeks during autumn leaf-fall to keep flow rates up and prevent overflow.

Yes, the polyethylene construction is chemically resistant and compatible with a wide range of liquids beyond harvested rainwater, making these lids equally useful on IBCs used for chemicals, additives or agricultural liquids. Always check compatibility with the specific liquid you're storing before fitting, particularly with strong solvents or acids.

A debris filter is a first line of defence, removing leaves, silt and coarse particles before they enter the tank, but it isn't a substitute for proper treatment if the water is destined for potable use. For non-potable applications such as garden irrigation or toilet flushing, a good strainer at the inlet is often all that's needed to keep the system running cleanly.
