What's the difference between a flange connector and a female tank connector?
A flange connector fits through a hole in the tank wall and is secured with a backing nut, giving a broad, sturdy base ideal for larger pipe diameters or higher-pressure connections. A female tank connector is threaded internally to accept a male-threaded pipe or fitting directly, making it a simpler, more compact option for smaller inlet and outlet points.
How do I know what size connector I need for my tank?
Measure the diameter of the hole or boss on your tank, and match this to the pipe diameter you're connecting to — most connectors are specified by both. If you're fitting a new tank rather than replacing an existing connector, check the tank manufacturer's specification for the correct inlet/outlet sizing before you order.
Do I need an overflow pipe on my water tank, and where should it discharge?
Yes — every tank should have an overflow fitted as a safeguard against ballcock or float valve failure, and it's a requirement under Building Regulations Part G for cold water storage. It should discharge externally in a conspicuous location, such as above an eaves gutter or external wall, so a running overflow is noticed quickly rather than causing hidden damage.
Are your tank connectors suitable for potable (drinking) water use?
Many of our connectors are WRAS approved and suitable for potable water systems — this will be stated clearly on the individual product listing. If you're plumbing into a drinking water supply, always check for WRAS approval rather than assuming compatibility, as non-potable fittings may use materials or seals not approved for wholesome water.
What materials are tank connectors and overflow extensions made from?
Most connectors are moulded from durable polypropylene or similar engineering plastics, chosen for their resistance to corrosion, UV degradation and the pressures of a working water system. Overflow extensions are typically the same or a compatible plastic, allowing a secure push-fit or threaded join without introducing weak points.
Can I fit a tank connector myself, or do I need a plumber?
Fitting a flange or female connector is a straightforward DIY job for anyone comfortable with basic plumbing — it typically involves cutting or drilling a hole to size, fitting a sealing washer each side of the tank wall, and tightening the backing nut evenly to avoid distorting the tank. That said, if the connection feeds a potable supply or you're unsure about the correct sealing arrangement, it's worth having a qualified plumber check or complete the job.
