Also known as dual pump sewage pump stations, they are designed to handle larger volumes of sewage and wastewater and are ideal if gravity flow at your property is not possible or practical. When would I need a twin pump station instead of a single pump version?

Twin pump stations are recommended wherever failure or downtime isn't an option — commercial sites, larger residential developments, or any property where the pump station serves multiple dwellings. If one pump fails or is undergoing maintenance, the second pump automatically takes over, so wastewater continues to be pumped away without interruption. For a single household with easy access for repairs, a single pump station may be sufficient, but twin systems offer far greater peace of mind.

How do I work out what size pump station I need?

Sizing depends on the number of properties or fixtures being served, expected peak flow rates, and the pumping head (vertical lift) plus distance to the discharge point. As a guide, larger households, holiday lets or commercial units with high simultaneous water use need greater tank capacity and pump duty than a single dwelling. Our technical team can help you select the right model if you provide details of your application, pipe run and rising main length.

Are twin pump sewage stations made from GRP or polyethylene, and does it matter?

Both materials are used across our range. GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) chambers tend to be extremely rigid and well suited to deeper installations or higher water tables, while polyethylene tanks are lighter, corrosion-resistant and generally more cost-effective for standard installations. Both are built to withstand the corrosive nature of sewage and years of continuous use — your installer can advise which suits your ground conditions best.

Do I need planning permission or building regs approval to install one?

Pump stations themselves don't usually need planning permission, but the discharge point and connection to a public sewer or treatment plant must meet Building Regulations Part H and may require a build-over or connection agreement with your local water authority. If you're discharging to a watercourse or soakaway rather than a public sewer, you'll also need Environment Agency consent. It's always worth checking with your local authority before installation begins.

What's involved in the electrical setup and control panel?

Every twin pump station comes with a control panel that alternates duty between the two pumps, monitors performance and triggers a visual and audible alarm if a fault or high water level is detected. The panel needs a suitable mains power supply and should be installed in a dry, accessible location by a qualified electrician. This ensures the system runs efficiently and alerts you promptly if something needs attention.

What ongoing maintenance do twin pump stations require?

We'd recommend an annual service as a minimum, checking both pumps, floats, non-return valves and the control panel, along with periodically clearing any debris from the wet well. Because there are two pumps sharing the workload, wear is reduced compared with single pump systems, but regular inspection still extends service life and prevents unexpected failures. Keep a record of servicing, as this is often required to maintain manufacturer warranties.
