Blowers need to be kept dry, well-ventilated and protected from direct weather, so most are housed in a purpose-made blower housing or a dry outbuilding close to the treatment plant. Keep the air inlet clear of debris, leaves and insects, and avoid siting it anywhere it could flood or sit in standing water. Shorter, direct pipe runs to the plant give better efficiency than long convoluted routes.

Most modern blowers, including Secho and Charles Austen models, are designed to run quietly for continuous 24/7 operation, typically comparable to background garden noise. Housing the unit in an insulated blower box or cabinet reduces noise further, which is worth considering if it's sited near a house, patio or boundary. A blower that suddenly becomes noticeably louder or starts rattling is usually a sign the diaphragm or bearings need attention.

The main job is keeping the air filter clean or replacing it periodically, as a blocked filter restricts airflow and forces the blower to work harder, shortening its lifespan. Diaphragm-type blowers also have wearing parts such as diaphragms and valves that benefit from an annual check as part of your treatment plant service. Common warning signs include reduced or no airflow, unusual noise or vibration, the unit running hot, or your treatment plant showing signs of poor treatment such as odour or a surcharged tank. Since the blower drives the biological process in most sewage treatment systems, even a short outage can affect performance, so it's worth keeping a spare filter and diaphragm kit on hand. If in doubt, isolate and inspect the unit before assuming a full replacement is needed.

Swapping a compatible like-for-like blower is generally straightforward for anyone comfortable with basic electrical and pipework connections, as most units simply connect via an air hose and a standard plug or fused spur. That said, always isolate the power supply before disconnecting anything, and check your plant's manual for any specific requirements.
