How do I know if my pump chamber control panel needs replacing?

If in doubt, get a qualified electrician to test the panel before assuming the pump itself is at fault.
What does a non-return valve actually do in a pump chamber?
A non-return (check) valve stops wastewater that has already been pumped out from flowing back into the chamber once the pump switches off. Without one in good condition, you'll get repeated pump cycling, increased wear, and in some cases sewage backing up towards the property. Valves should be inspected periodically as they can wear or seize, especially where solids are present in the effluent.
Do I need a pump alarm if my control panel already has one built in?
Many panels include a basic audible or visual alarm, but a separate high-level alarm gives an independent layer of protection if the panel itself fails. This is particularly important for chambers serving occupied buildings, where an undetected pump failure could lead to flooding or sewage backup. We'd recommend a standalone alarm as good practice, and it's often required by building control for certain installations.
