For two to four horses, a compact locker or single-bay unit is usually enough to hold saddles, bridles, rugs and grooming kit. Larger yards with shared tack rooms typically need a multi-compartment unit or a walk-in size to allow for saddle racks, bridle hooks and rug storage without overcrowding. If you're unsure, measure your existing tack room shelving and racking first, then choose a unit with at least that much usable floor and wall space.

GRP (fibreglass) units are lightweight, won't rust, and are easier to reposition around a yard, making them a good choice where damp or coastal air is a concern. Steel units tend to be more resistant to impact and forced entry but need regular checks for corrosion, especially near paddocks or wash-down areas. Choice usually comes down to whether you prioritise low maintenance or maximum physical security.

Yes — leather, rugs and numnahs will develop mould and mildew quickly in a sealed, damp environment, so look for units with vents or louvres built in. Good airflow also stops condensation forming on saddle racks and metalwork overnight. If your chosen unit doesn't have vents as standard, it's worth adding simple louvred vents during installation.

Most units are supplied with lockable doors as standard, but the level of security varies between a basic hasp and staple for a padlock through to multi-point locking systems. For yards storing higher-value saddlery, it's worth upgrading to a five-lever mortice lock or adding a secondary padlock point. Bear in mind insurers may specify a minimum lock standard for tack room contents cover.

A level, firm, well-drained base is essential — concrete slab, paving or a compacted MOT type 1 sub-base all work well. Avoid siting units directly on grass or soft ground, as this leads to uneven settling and door misalignment over time. Where units are on legs or a raised floor, make sure the support points are fully bearing rather than spanning gaps.

Units typically arrive on a flatbed or curtain-sider and are offloaded using a HIAB crane or similar plant, so you'll need reasonable vehicle access and clear space at the final position. Smaller lockers can sometimes be manhandled into place by two or three people, but larger walk-in units require mechanical offloading. Check ground conditions and access widths (gateways, tight turns) before booking delivery to avoid delays on the day.
