How do I choose the right size energiser for my fence?
Sizing depends on fence length and the number of wire strands, not just the area you're enclosing — a single strand run of 5km needs far less power than a 3-strand run of the same distance. As a rule of thumb, always buy an energiser rated for more than your current needs, as vegetation growth and future fence extensions will draw down the output. Our product listings show maximum fence length per model to help you match power to your setup.
Should I choose a mains, battery or solar energiser?
Mains energisers are the most powerful and cost-effective option where you have access to a nearby power supply, making them ideal for permanent fencing around yards and paddocks. Battery models suit remote sites without mains power but need a charged 12V leisure battery to run, and solar units are best for permanent remote fencing where sunlight is reliable and battery changing isn't practical. If you're often moving fencing for rotational grazing, a battery or solar unit gives you the flexibility mains power can't.
What does the joule rating on an energiser actually mean?
The joule rating tells you the stored energy released per pulse, which determines how effectively the shock will deter livestock through vegetation, dry soil or poor earthing conditions. Higher joule output is particularly important for longer fence runs, multi-strand fences or where you're containing determined animals like cattle or horses. For small gardens or short runs keeping in poultry or pets, a lower-output energiser is usually sufficient and more economical to run.
Do I need a specific earthing system for my energiser to work properly?
Yes — proper earthing is essential, as a poorly earthed system is the most common reason for a weak or ineffective shock. You'll typically need one earth stake per joule of output, driven at least a metre apart in soil that stays reasonably moist year-round. Skimping on earthing undermines even the most powerful energiser, so it's worth getting this right from the outset.
Can one energiser run multiple fence lines or paddocks?
Yes, provided the total combined fence length falls within the energiser's rated output and you use insulated connectors or in-line cut-out switches to manage separate zones. This lets you isolate one paddock for maintenance without dropping power to the rest of the system. Just be aware that running multiple long lines from one unit will draw more from the power source, so factor this into your sizing.
Are electric fence energisers safe to use around children and pets?
Energisers sold for agricultural and domestic use are designed to deliver a short, sharp pulse that's uncomfortable but not dangerous, and all our units meet current safety standards. That said, warning signs should be fitted at regular intervals along any electrified fence, particularly where the public might have access. Always isolate the power before carrying out any fence repairs or maintenance work.
