Lids are generally matched to the tank manufacturer, model and the diameter of the opening rather than a universal fitting, so always measure the aperture or check the tank's model number before ordering. If you're replacing a lost or damaged lid, it's worth checking whether it's a bolt-down, twist-lock or simple drop-in fit, as this affects compatibility. Many of our lids are manufactured to be compatible with WRAS-approved potable water systems, but not every lid in the range is rated for drinking water storage — some are designed purely for non-potable or rainwater harvesting applications. Check the individual product listing for WRAS compliance before fitting to a drinking water tank. If in doubt, ask us to confirm suitability for your specific use.

A solid lid provides a permanent, secure seal and is typically used where regular access isn't needed. An access lid is designed to be lightweight and easy to lift or unbolt, giving you quick entry for inspection, dip-testing or cleaning without compromising the tank's overall security. Most sites benefit from having at least one access point even on an otherwise sealed tank.

Yes — a properly fitted lid should form a tight seal that keeps out insects, rodents and birds, all of which can introduce contamination or debris into stored water. Look for lids with a rebated or overlapping design rather than a simple flat cover, as these give a much better seal against pests. This is particularly important for potable water tanks, where contamination risk has direct health implications.

Most of our lids are made from UV-stabilised polyethylene or GRP, both of which resist the embrittlement and discolouration that ordinary plastics suffer under prolonged sunlight. This makes them suitable for tanks installed above ground and exposed to the weather year-round. That said, periodic checks for cracking or warping are still good practice, especially on older installations.

Most lids are designed for straightforward DIY fitting — typically a drop-on, clip or bolt-down arrangement that doesn't require specialist tools. Make sure the tank is empty or the water level is safely below the opening before you start, and check the seal is seated correctly all the way round once fitted. For larger or bespoke tanks, or where the lid also carries fittings such as vents or level gauges, it's worth having a competent installer check the job.
